I have the honour to inform you that on a vote

for $26,189 to cover the cost of the increases to salaries of

certain officers of the Government sanctioned in your despatch

No.280 of the 8th. December, 1899, being submitted by my direc-

tion to the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council on

the 8th.instant, the Senior Unofficial Member asked on behalf

of himself and his colleagues that the consideration of the

vote should be postponed for two weeks and that in the mean-

time there should be supplied to them information as to who

were the signatories to the Petition of Civil Servants who

asked for the appointment of a Committee to enquire generally

into the question of salaries, and as to whether any applica-

tions for increase other than from officers dealt with in

your despatch referred to above had been made.

2. I complied with the request by causing the Unofficial Members to be furnished with the names of the sig-

natories to the Petition referred to, the names of officers who had applied for increases of salary during 1899 and with the information that in 1898 a Petition had been received from

The Right Honourable
